GM and Haiti: Compare and Contrast.

By admin | Feb 2, 2010
Let's take a moment to review:

Money invested to date in GM:

Money required to rebuild Haiti:

I just think this contrast and comparison between GM and Haiti is interesting and intriguing.  However it seems to raise more questions than answers.

  • Are these investments?
  • What's the ROI?
  • Is it humanitarian aid?
  • Is it money down a rat hole?
  • How can these be rationalized?
  • Should they be?

  Thoughts???

Another Reason Why We Need to Revolutionize Health Care

By admin | Jan 28, 2010

I just got this in the mail today.  30 pages of text with strike throughs, ALL CAPS and underlined text that is absolutely not going to be read from cover to cover.  There is no way any of us would ever understand it anyway.  Seriously,  what does this mean?

"Note: Severe Mental Illness, Serious Emotional Disturbances of a Child and any condition meeting the definition of "Mental or Nervous Disorders and Substance Abuse" is a Mental or Nervous Disorder no matter what the cause (please see the Part entitled Definitions)."

This is proof why insurance costs so much and there is so much waste and inefficiency.  God help the author(s).

What Should Obama Do?

By admin | Jan 26, 2010
Really good piece from Thomas L. Friedman in the NYT

Obama should make the centerpiece of his presidency mobilizing a million new start-up companies that won’t just give us temporary highway jobs, but lasting good jobs that keep America on the cutting edge. The best way to counter the Tea Party movement, which is all about stopping things, is with an Innovation Movement, which is all about starting things. Without inventing more new products and services that make people more productive, healthier or entertained — that we can sell around the world — we’ll never be able to afford the health care our people need, let alone pay off our debts.

Obama should bring together the country’s leading innovators and ask them: “What legislation, what tax incentives, do we need right now to replicate you all a million times over” — and make that his No. 1 priority. Inspiring, reviving and empowering Start-up America is his moon shot.

Is the Web The Future of Mobile Apps?

By admin | Jan 21, 2010
Back in the day there was this little program from Sun called Java that touted: "write once, run anywhere".  We'll we may have finally gotten there (or at least I have).  It's called the web.

I just finished an article in Fast Company on this topic.  In summary the point is this:

"…you'd be a fool to ignore the long-term trend in software — away from incompatible platforms and restrictive programming regimes, and toward write-once, run-anywhere code that works on a variety of devices, without interference from middlemen. As different kinds of mobile devices hit the market, from phones to tablet PCs to smartpens to e-book readers and beyond, developers will find that trend harder to ignore. They'll need to create programs that can work not just on iPhones but on everything. Fortunately, there's an app for that: It's called the Web."

The implications are startling: No need to be an apple certified developer, no waiting for apple to approve your app, no need to program for numerous platforms if you want to go for Android, iPhone, etc…  In my quest to move my business ventures forward with as quickly as possible and without having to rely on outside sources which are outside of my control, web development takes on a whole new meaning and urgency.

So, let's have at it.  Apps for All.
